SAMPLE — Story 1 of 11

Alex and his friend Jan took a ferry out to the islands. The water was rough. The boat rocked and swayed. Jan gripped the railing tight. Alex stood at the front, letting the spray hit his face. When they reached the island, they walked along the shore. The sand was white and fine. Shells of every shape lined the water's edge. Jan picked up a spiral one and held it to her ear. "I can hear the waves inside it," she said. Alex smiled. They followed the beach around a bend and found a tide pool. Inside it, small creatures clung to the rocks. A star shaped one was bright orange. A tiny crab darted under a ledge. Jan crouched down and watched. Alex sat on a rock nearby. The sun was warm. The sound of the waves was steady and calm. "I could stay here forever," Jan said. Alex nodded. They sat until the tide started coming in, then walked back to catch the last ferry home.
