Magic Stories for 4th and 5th Grade Readers

Alex found an old book in his closet. The pages were thick and yellow. On the front it said "Magic Spells" in gold print. His friend Jan came over. "What is that?" she asked. Alex opened the book. The first spell was for making things float. Alex read the words out loud. His pen lifted off the desk and hung in the air. Jan's mouth fell open. "Do it again!" she said. Alex read the spell one more time. This time, his whole desk lifted up. Books and papers floated around the room. Jan laughed and grabbed a floating pen. "This is the best day ever," she said. Alex closed the book. Everything came back down with a soft thud. He put the book in a safe spot. He and Jan had a lot more spells to try.

Alex had a ring that glowed in the dark. She had found it in an old box at a yard sale. Her friend Lee was spending the night. "Watch this," Alex said. She held up the ring. It shone bright blue. The light filled the whole room. Then something strange happened. The walls seemed to melt away. Alex and Lee were standing in a forest made of crystal. The trees were clear and shone with color. "Where are we?" Lee asked. Alex looked at the ring. "I think the ring took us here," she said. They walked through the crystal forest. The ground sparkled under their feet. A small creature with wings flew past. It left a trail of blue light behind it. Alex held up the ring again. In a flash, they were back in her room. Lee sat down. "That was real," he said. Alex smiled and put the ring back in its box.

Alex was walking home when she saw a small shop she had never seen before. The sign said "Magic Things" in red paint. Alex pushed open the door. Inside, the shop was full of odd items. Jars with glowing dust lined the shelves. Old books were stacked up high. A tall woman stood behind the counter. "May I help you?" she asked. Alex pointed at a small glass ball. "What does that do?" she asked. "Hold it and make a wish," the woman said. Alex picked it up. The ball was warm. She wished for something simple. She wished for snow. Alex walked outside. Soft white flakes were falling from a clear sky. Her friend Max ran up. "It is snowing!" he said. Alex looked at the glass ball in her hand and smiled. The magic shop was gone when she turned back. But the snow kept falling all night long.
