Superheroes Stories for 4th and 5th Grade Readers

Alex had a secret. When no one was looking, he could run faster than any person alive. His friend Jan found out one day at the park. A kid's ball rolled into the street. Alex was across the park in a flash. He grabbed the ball before it hit a car. Jan's mouth fell open. "How did you do that?" she asked. Alex looked around. "I will tell you, but you have to keep it a secret," he said. Jan nodded. From that day on, Jan was Alex's partner. She would watch for trouble, and Alex would use his speed to help. They stopped a dog from running into traffic. They caught a thief who grabbed a lady's purse. No one ever saw Alex move. He was that fast. At the end of each day, Jan and Alex met at the park bench. "Good work today," Jan would say. Alex smiled. "Same time next time."

Alex had a power she could not explain. She could make plants grow just by touching them. Her friend Lee was the only one who knew. One day, the school garden was dying. The plants were dry and brown. Alex stayed after class. She put her hands on the soil. Green shoots came up through the dirt. Lee watched from the door. "You are amazing," he said. Alex smiled. By the end of the hour, the garden was full of tall, green plants with bright flowers. The teacher was shocked the next day. "How did this happen?" she asked. Alex just shrugged. Lee gave her a look. They kept the secret between them. Alex used her power in small ways after that. She grew a plant for a sick kid in class. She fixed a tree that had lost its leaves. She never asked for praise. "This is just what I do," she told Lee. He nodded. "And you do it well."

Alex had a dream that she could fly. When she woke up, she was floating above her bed. Her friend Max was coming over for breakfast. Alex had to get down before he arrived. She grabbed the bed post and pulled herself back to the ground. She put on heavy boots to keep her feet on the floor. When Max knocked, Alex was sitting at the table, looking normal. But at the park that afternoon, a cat got stuck high in a tree. No one could reach it. Alex looked around. No one was watching. She kicked off her boots and flew up to the branch. She grabbed the cat and floated back down. Max was standing there with his mouth open. "You can fly," he said. Alex put her boots back on. "Please do not tell anyone," she said. Max grinned. "Your secret is safe with me." Alex smiled. Having a friend who knew made it a lot less lonely.
