struggling readers for every trained reading specialist.
66% of U.S. students cannot read proficiently. The gap widens every month without effective intervention.
Students who struggle in third grade are four times more likely to drop out. By middle school, those who can't read proficiently are locked out of nearly every subject.
Traditional approaches haven't solved this. Tutoring costs $75 to $150/hour. Reading apps entertain but don't teach at the phoneme level. Scripted programs bore students and fail to adapt.
Regardless of budget or availability, LUCA delivers phoneme-level intervention aligned to exact skill gaps.
How We Solve ThisSee how LUCA delivers Reading Specialist-level support through SoundScout, StoryGen, and Assessment Intelligence.

"My son struggled with reading. For years, no one could tell us why."
In 2012, our kindergartener Luca was struggling to read. What followed was years of searching for solutions: 504 plans, IEP meetings, specialists, but no answers. It took until 7th grade before we finally received a dyslexia diagnosis.
Every program we found was either unaffordable, unproven, or so boring Luca wouldn't use it. If something effective, affordable, and engaging existed, we would have found it.
It hadn't been built yet. So I built it.
Today, Luca is a National Honor Society inductee, in college, on the Dean's List. His journey is why LUCA exists.

Most programs treat every reader the same. LUCA listens to every sound your child makes, finds the exact gaps, and builds a reading journey as unique as your child.
Sound-by-sound speech recognition
LUCA captures every sound as students read aloud, identifying exactly where difficulty occurs. Not just right or wrong, but precisely which sounds need attention.
Pinpoints specific skill gaps
Patterns across 763,000+ sound-to-spelling connections reveal each reader's unique strengths and gaps. No separate testing required.
Personalized reading intervention
Personalized stories and targeted lessons adapt in real time to each student's needs and interests. No two readers experience the same content.
Six powerful features working in harmony to transform reading intervention.
Scale without staff. LUCA delivers intervention without adding to your workload, meeting SOR mandates with structured literacy.
Bring the Reading Specialist home. No teaching expertise required. LUCA guides the instruction with stories your child loves.
Keeping educators, families, and students connected on the reading journey.
Other programs listen at the word level. LUCA listens at the phoneme level, identifying specific vowel confusion or blend difficulty. This precision leads to faster, more targeted progress.
Traditional programs deliver the same content regardless of needs. StoryGen, JourneyBuilder, and Pathfinder generate content dynamically via Assessment Intelligence.
Tutoring remains the gold standard, but $75 to $150/hour reaches only a fraction who need help. LUCA delivers phoneme-level skill identification + unlimited personalized practice at a fraction of the cost.

“LUCA gives us data we have never had before.”
“My child loves the stories and doesn't complain about reading anymore!”

Scott Sosso, a father whose son Luca was diagnosed with dyslexia in 7th grade after years of struggling. That frustration led Scott to collaborate with Carnegie Mellon researchers to build an intelligent reading specialist operating at the phoneme level.
Existing programs failed one family—and millions more. Tutoring cost $75 to $150/hour. Traditional programs were dated with zero engagement. If something effective, affordable, and engaging existed, we would have found it. It hadn't been built yet.
Luca struggled from kindergarten through his 7th-grade diagnosis. Once he understood how he learned best, everything changed. He was inducted into the National Honor Society and is now in college today, on the Dean's List.
Phoneme-level listening. Most technology operates at the word level—correct or incorrect without knowing why. LUCA's SoundScout listens to individual sounds, identifying specific gaps like vowel confusion or blend difficulty. This enables targeted instruction addressing root causes.
K-12 students—from emergent readers through older students needing intervention. The adaptive engine adjusts complexity based on assessed skill levels, meeting each reader where they are.
Yes. LUCALabs is built on Science of Reading principles and Structured Literacy methodology—explicit, systematic, evidence-based instruction grounded in research from the National Reading Panel, Ehri, Share, and contemporary reading science.
Built for dyslexic readers first, but Science of Reading principles benefit all struggling readers. One in five children has dyslexia (80% undiagnosed). 66% of students cannot read at grade level. Systematic phonics helps any child who has not cracked the code.
Absolutely. Create a personalized story in the Playground—no account required. Schools can request a demo to see the full platform, including EducatorHub analytics and MTSS documentation.
Most readers see meaningful progress within weeks. Real-time tracking means you monitor improvement from the first session.
Yes—in states where LUCA is approved. Check your state's status on our ESA approval page.
Every reader deserves a specialist. The math. The science. The story. It all starts with the first phoneme.
